The Jade Emperor is one of the most important deities in traditional Chinese culture and religion and in Taoism. The Jade Emperor, known by many other names such as Heavenly Grandfather, Heavenly Duke, Jade Lord of of the Highest Emperor and Great Emperor of Jade, is considered the ruler of heaven and a manifestation of the first god.<br/><br/>

In Taoist theology, he was originally known as Yuhuang, and was assistant to the first supreme administrator of Heaven, Yuanshi Tianzun. He took over after Yuanshi Tianzun stepped down, becoming overseer of both Heaven and Earth. In other origin stories, he was originally the crown prince of the kingdom of Pure Felicity and Majestic Heavenly Lights and Ornaments, and was kind and intelligent even in his youth. He was said to be benevolent and respectful to both men and creatures, and made sure everyone in the kingdom found peace and contentment after he ascended to the throne. He eventually left to cultivate Tao, and became Jade Emperor after over one hundred million years of cultivation and meditation.<br/><br/>

The Jade Emperor plays important roles in various Chinese folk tales and stories such as 'Journey to the West', and he is still worshipped in Taoist temples. Temples to the Jade Emperor can be found across China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, with celebrations on his 'birthday' every ninth day of the first lunar month.
Guanyin, short for Guanshiyin, is a bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism often associated with compassion and mercy. While she is often portrayed as a woman, she is beyond gender and can be depicted as both male and female.<br/><br/>

Guanyin is often referred to as the 'most widely beloved Buddhist Divinity', due to her miraculous powers and her loving compassion. She is not only worshipped in Buddhism, but also in Taoism and Chinese folk religion, with various stories and legends about her. Guanyin plays a very important role in the classic Chinese novel 'Journey to the West.'<br/><br/>

Hosokawa Takakuni (1484-1531) was the most powerful military commander in the Muromachi Period under the 12th shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiharu. He was a member of the Hosokawa clan, and adopted brother to Hosokawa Sumimoto.<br/><br/>

In 1507, he aided his brother in avenging the death of their adopted father, Hosokawa Masamoto, at the hands of Hosokawa Sumiyuki. However, he betrayed his adopted brother and the head of the Hosokawa clan when the previous shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiki, was returned to power in 1508. He became the new head of the clan, monopolising much of the shogunate's power in the next few years, turning Yoshiki into a puppet shogun.<br/><br/>

When Yoshiki escaped his 'captivity' in 1521, Takakuni made Ashikaga Yoshiharu the new shogun. He was eventually purged from Kyoto, the capital, in 1527, by an alliance between Myoshi Motonaga and Hosokawa Harumoto. His army was defeated in 1531, and he tried to hide in an alcohol storage room in Amagasaki, Settsu Province, before he was discovered and, rather than be captured, committed suicide.
In Taoism, a <i>xian</i> is used to describe an enlightened person, almost always immortals. They have, through self-reflection and devotion, reached a state in Taoism where they have attained spiritual and physical immortality, usually also involving methods such as alchemy, breath meditation, <i>qigong</i> and <i>tai chi</i>.<br/><br/><i>Xian</i> are often described as superhuman and with a variety of magical and supernatural abilities, such as immunity to heat and cold, flight, and superhuman speeds. Some can survive on just air and dew, or can use their magic to bring death or grant life.
Kshitigarbha, sometimes spelt Ksitigarbha, is a bodhisattva mainly worshipped in East Asian and Theravada Buddhism, and is often depicted as a monk with a halo around his shaved head. His name may translate to 'Earth Treasury' or 'Earth Matrix', and is renowned for his vow to instruct all beings in the six worlds between the death of Gautama Buddha and the ascendance of Maitreya, as well as his oath to not achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied.<br/><br/>

Thus, Kshitigarbha is often associated with hell and as the bodhisattva of hell-beings. He is also the guardian of children and patrod deity for deceased children and aborted fetuses in Japanese culture, where he is known by the name Jizo or Ojizo-sama. In Thailand and Laos, a <i>bhikkhu</i> named Phra Malai is often associated with Kshitigarbha due to their similar qualities, where he descends to Hell to teach and comfort the suffering hell-beings.
The Eight Immortals are a group of legendary <i>xian</i> (immortals) in Chinese mythology, folk religion and Taoism. The Eight Immortals are believed to have been born in either the Tang or Song Dynasty, though they were first described in the Yuan Dynasty, most likely named after the Eight Immortals Scholars of the Han.<br/><br/>

The names of the Immortals were: He Xiangu; Cao Guojiu; Li Tieguai; Lan Caihe; Lu Dongbin; Han Xiangzi; Zhang Guolao; and Zhongli Quan. They were each said to have in their possession a tool with which they could transfer their power to and either bestow life or destroy evil, known as the 'Covert Eight Immortals'. They were believed to have lived on a group of five islands, including Penglai Mountain-Island, in the Bohai Sea.<br/><br/>

The Eight Immortals are considered signs of longevity and prosperity, and are very popular in art and literature. They are a commonly seen element in secular Chinese culture and revered by Taoists, with many shrines dedicated to them scattered throughout China, Taiwan and Singapore.
Construction of Changdeok Palace began in 1405, and was completed in 1412. The Palace was burnt to the ground during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and reconstructed in 1609 by King Seonjo and King Gwanghaegun. The palace was also attacked by the Manchu Qing but throughout its history of reconstruction and repair has remained faithful to its original design.<br/><br/>

Changgyeong Palace was built in the mid-15th century by King Sejong for his father, Taejong. It was originally named 'Suganggung', but it was renovated and enlarged in 1483 by King Seongjong, at which time it received its current name.
The Sakyamuni Buddha is shown flanked by two disciples teaching the Lotus Sutra on 'Vulture Peak'. Siddartha Gautama, also known as Śākyamuni ('Sage of the Śākyas'), is the primary figure in Buddhism, and accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers. Various collections of teachings attributed to him were passed down by oral tradition, and first committed to writing about 400 years later.
The Astana Graves are a series of underground tombs located 6km from the ancient city of Gaochang, and 42km from Turpan, in Xinjiang, China. The tombs were used by the inhabitants of Gaochang, both commoners and locals, for about 600 years from 200 CE – 800 CE.<br/><br/>

The complex covers 10 square kilometers and contains over 1,000 tombs. Different plots for separate castes and families are marked by gravel dividers. Due to the arid environment many important artifacts have been well preserved at the tombs, including natural mummies.<br/><br/>

A typical tomb is entered by a 10 meter sloping staircase. The tombs are not very large, usually only 2 meters high. Some tombs also have murals inside. The deceased were laid on a small raised platform in the back of the tomb, surrounded by possessions and even food. Their faces were covered by cloths, some of which have distinct Persian motifs. A small funeral brick was placed to next to each body, on which was written the person’s name and other biographical information. These bricks have been incredibly useful for historians to date the tombs’ finds.<br/><br/>

There are also various Tang Dynasty figurines and silk paintings in the Astana Graves. A new pavilion has been built outside the old graveyard; the centerpiece is a large statue of Fuxi and Nüwa based on the silk banners found on the inner ceilings of the tombs.
